Squiggly Stories is run by Steph Hagan.
Steph is an experienced freelance researcher specialising in bespoke historical and archive research, working for historical research agencies, individuals, companies and heritage organisations
Providing tailored research services for individuals and organisations for a wide range of purposes: whether you have hit a brick wall in your own research; are interested in uncovering the stories behind individual people or industries; would like your own research verified; or need some help starting your family tree from scratch.
As each story is unique, so is the way each project is delivered and end result tailored to the client's needs and budget - from simple pdf reports, to bound books and large-scale charts.
Providing archival research for the corporate and heritage sector and house histories for individuals.
Each project is developed in partnership and conversation with the client and based on their needs - whether that is content for an exhibition; research to support a programme of activity for a corporate anniversary; or an individual who simply wants to know more about the origins of their own house.
Steph Hagan is a researcher and consultant with over 20 years experience in the private and non-profit sector before turning freelance in 2016.
Her own squiggly career includes working for an architect; researching a book about the venture capital industry, and 14 years spent working with companies on sustainability and community investment initiatives. With degrees in history and design studies, she understands how both the research question and format of the end product influence each other and has produced content for a wide range of offline and online media.
Squiggly Stories was created to help tell the stories of the people, houses and places in our pasts; stories which can only be told by knitting together multiple different strands and sources of information. Neither the stories, nor the research process, are often straightforward or linear!
From a base in South West London I have easy access to the major national archives including The National Archives at Kew and British Library. I also travel to county and local record offices as needed and to the many specialist collections within London - just a few I have worked in are the Caird Library at the National Maritime Museum, the Templar Study Centre at the National Army Museum and RIBA Study Rooms at the V&A.
Fees depend on the type of research required and are charged on an hourly or daily rate. Travel and additional expenses (e.g. copying or camera permits and certificates) are charged in addition. All costs are agreed in advance.
